Venice Film Festival

The Lido of Venice is getting ready to host the 66th Venice International Film Festival.
Organized, as usual, by the Venice Biennale, directed by Marco Müller, the International Film Festival will be held from 2 to 12 September. It will welcome the most prominent stars and her cinemas will show the most awaited movies of the coming season.

Shows, jet sets and much more. Great space will be given to retrospectives and homage to relevant personalities, as a contribute to a better knowledge of the history of cinema.

To open this 66th edition, on Tuesday 1 September, will be the screening of The Great War by Mario Monicelli, part of the ore-opening ceremony.

75 are the movies in competition, 71 in world preview and 4 in international preview. They’ll be judged by five international Juries, according to the following categories: Venezia 66, non-competing films, Horizons, Italian reverse shot, Short film, These Phantoms 2: recovered Italian Cinema.
Next to the official selection, during these 11 days, other events will also take place, such as: International Critics’ Week (A series of 7 or 8 films – debut works – independently selected by a commission nominated by the National Syndicate of Italian Film Critics), and Venice Days (A series of 10-12 films independently organized by a commission nominated by the Italian Association of Film-makers and by the Association of Independent Directors and Producers).

The Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievements was awarded to US director and producer John Lasseter – one of the main figures of contemporary animation innovation – and to the directors of Disney Pixar.
The prize will be handed to the winners on Sunday 6 September 2009, at 5 p.m., during a special ceremony taking place at the Grand Hall of the Cinema Palace at the Venice Lido, in the presence of Disney Pixar directors: Brad Bird, Pete Docter, Andrew Stanton and Lee Unkrich.

The opening ceremony of the 66th Venice International Film Festival is scheduled for Wednesday 2 September and it’ll be followed by the screening, world preview, of Baarìa by Giuseppe Tornatore, which is a competing movie.
