Carignano del Sulcis route

A “Wine and Food” itinerary in South West Sardinia

A new wine and food route in Italy was traced, a route whose protagonist is Carignano del Sulcis, a red wine produced in the Sulcis Iglesiente region, in south west of Sardinia. We are talking about a wine that obtained the DOC certification in 1977, whose vineyards’ peculiarity stands in the resistance to winds rich in saltiness and to phylloxera. It is characterized by a dark ruby colour tending to burgundy red, by a very rich and intense bouquet, carrying scents of stewed prunes, dried fruit and morello cherries, and by a full-bodied and well-structured flavour.

Considering the quality of this wine, the STL Sulcis Iglesiente and the wine cellars of the area made up for the “Carignano del Sulcis Route”, an itinerary that runs through the vineyards of the  municipalities of: Calasetta, Carbonia, Carloforte, Giba, Masainas, Narcao, Nuxis, Perdaxius, Piscinas, Portoscuso, San Giovanni Suergiu, Santadi, Sant’Anna Arresi, Sant’Antioco, Tratalias e Villaperuccio. This route, to experience and enjoy in slow motion, leads the visitor to the discovery of wine cellars, wine and agri-tourism businesses, vineyards cultivated just next to the sea, wine shops, wine and vine museums, ancient villages and strikingly beautiful glimpses, all set against a harmonious naturalistic and cultural frame.

Not to be misses is the visit to the wine cellars and the suggestions of thematic stays, to be discovered on the website www.sulcisiglesiente.eu

The wine cellars on the route of Carignano del Sulcis

On Sant’Antioco island the grown “piede franco” vines stretch for 250 hectares.  Since 1955 The Sardus Pater Wine Cellar, cultivated these grapes producing the DOC “Carignano del Sulcis”. Each bottle of the wine cellars is the result of a careful selection of grapes, of a vinification realized according to ancient rules and modern vinification techniques, in order to guarantee a wine of the best quality. It is this the procedure followed also to create “Arenas”, the Carignano Reserve that was awarded three glasses by the Gambero Rosso Italy’s Wines Guide 2009.

Among the French oak wine barrels, the grand red wines of the Santadi Wine Cellar wonderfully and harmoniously end their evolution cycle. The tourist that wishes to find the scents of Sardinia well hedged in a goblet, surely must not miss out “Rocca Rubia”, DOC Reserve Carignano del Sulcis, characterized by an almost impenetrable ruby red that gives forth intense mulberry, blueberry, vanilla, myrtle, leather and liquorice scents: a multi-awarded, well-structured and aroma-persistent wine. But the prince of Red wines is “Terre Brune”, characterized by grand style, complexity and longevity. It is possible to taste them after an interesting visit in the cellars, guided by the knowledgeable narrations of the oenologist.

A visit to the Mesa Wine Cellar in Sant’Anna Arresi allows for a better understanding of wine production techniques, to test their intensity and the differences in flavours. This is a modern wine cellar managed by Gavino Sanna, who owns a 50-hectare vineyard where it is possible to enjoy the taste of “Buio”, the Carignano del Sulcis cultivated on the valleys of the Su Baroni hill, close to the Porto Pino bay, and the taste of “Buio Buio”. The mastery and passion for this land, allowed for the realization of a real wine temple, conveying a unique image to the product: very dark bottles made of heavy glass, showing minimalist tags that feature one single colour and the name of the wine surrounded by a modern stylization of Sardinian traditional tapestries.

Located close to the Municipality of Calasetta, at the northern edge of Sant’Antioco island, the Calasetta Wine Cellar was awarded, throughout the years, numerous prizes and distinctions for the quality of its wine production. The business was funded in 1932 and since then it selects and cultivated the best grapes coming from the Carignano autochthonous vine. On the island the Carignano vine is cultivated “franco di piede”; because of this and thanks to the sandy soil, what is obtained is a wine with unique characteristics, unmistakable for its kind, bottled with the tag “Piede Franco”, exactly like the technique used to cultivate it.
