Complications at Baselworld 2009
From Perrelet to Greubel & Forsey
From March 26 to April 2 Baselworld 2009, the World Watch and Jewellery Show, will be on show. The most important trend in regard to watches is that of allowing creativity to express itself: materials and techniques are combined and modified. Numerous will be the clocks boasting important complications and innovations, which are the direct outcome of the horology art that becomes a real expression tool.
If on the one side the smartphone that auto-recharges through the movement of Ulysse Nardin and the new Kudoke watches’ collection will be talked about, on the other side art and technologic innovation will merge into the Greubel & Forsey’s Quadruple tourbillon à différentiel sphérique. The four Tourbillons offer a magnificent performance. In order to ensure the perfect visibility of the essential elements, transparent zephyr bridges were chosen.
In the name of elegance and harmony the company decided for an asymmetric case and half-moon shaped sectorial indicators of seconds and of the charge reserve.
Perrelet will be present at the show with the A3021/1 reference, an automatic tourbillon. The complication comes with a polished titanium case and 18 carats pink gold. The mechanic movement is decorated with Cotes de Genève refinements whereas crystal insets make up the name of the brand, all visible by the bottom plate. The carbon background and the rubber watch-strap featuring a classic deployante buckle in titanium and 18 carats pink gold convey a sportive touch to the clock.
For the first time the two most famous technical inventions born in Saxony are merged into the Glashütte Original’s Senator Meissen Tourbillon: the Meissen Porcelain and the Flying Tourbillon united to create a classic watch. The clock face is realized in porcelain and boasts hand-painted numbers and logo, with a material that is perfectly modelled so to make visible the case of the complication. Another new idea presented by the German maison is the Senator Navigator Perpetual Calendar, which comes with the aviators’ watches’ collection.
After the great success of Chapter One, launched in 2008, Maîtres du Temps launches a new version – a limited edition – with black dial and cylinders that create pleasant contrasting light effects on the case made of white gold. Very elegant are the hands, made of white gold and set on a black dial, and the bright red second cronographic hand, which overtops the secondary dials with a guilloché soleil decoration. The moon and the stars shine on the dark background of the sky and get settled on an anodized aluminium roll. It opposes both visually and technically to the cylinder indicating day and week. Both rolls are well set into the case whose shape they accord to. The tourbillon literally bursts out of the dark dial creating light contrasts that reach the roll of the days’ indicator, creating a three-dimensional effect.
De Grisogono is exhibiting at the show the Instrumento Grande Open Date, a man’s watch featuring an open dial. This is a recently re-elaborated edition of the Grande Open Date aimed at increasing readableness, in which the indexes at hours 2, 4, 8, and 11 are eliminated, and the logo, decentred towards 9 and an original design are the main characteristics. The dial unveils two disks that are exceptionally big indicating the date. The big dauphine hands with luminescent inserts in Superluminova take up the case’s pink gold, so as the arrow-shaped bevelled indexes at hours , 9 and 12 which underline the slow rotation of the disks.
Eberhard shows to the public the pink gold version of the 8 Jours collection, the first watch with an 8-day charge reserve indicator, feature resulting from the presence of a special device – patented – composed by two overlapped springs that reach an over all metre and a half length. 8 Jour Grande Taille preserves the main characteristics of the steel version maintaining the significant dimensions of the case that unveils, on the bottom plate, its very refined peculiarity: part of the precious manually-chargeable mechanic movement.
