Cortina Polo Gold Cup
Sport and glamour on the Misurina Lake
Polo is exclusivity, luxury, sport and competitiveness. Players and horses move from one location to the other and, however constant the exciting atmosphere typical of this life style is, the itinerant nature gives each event a peculiar aspect. This is especially true when talking about snow-polo the variety created by Europeans that, given the rigid winters of this continent, had to find a solution for those months when the traditional game is not possible; these alternative solutions turned out to be really spectacular.
Born in the 1980s, today the competitions on the snow take place regularly during the winter months all over Europe: St. Moritz, Courchevel, Megève, Kitzbuhel and, of course, Cortina, where this year, since 14th until 21st February, was celebrated the twentieth anniversary of this important event. On the iced Misurina lake, surrounded by the Tre Cime di Lavaredo – and perfectly organized, despite the seven meters snow fallen few days ahead – five international teams encountered offering a unique show.
The kermes began with a welcome dinner, during which players coming from Italy, Russia and South America have been introduced. The following days, on the board of the pitch of the Sponsor Village, people coming from all over the world watched the competitions from the tents of sponsors such as Audi, Cortina Polo Club, Hotel de la Poste, Julius Baer and Malo, besides Cala di Volpe, Hotel Cristallo, Dall’Ava, Ruinart, Tardini and Toulà; brands that, espousing this life style, found an efficient instrument to project their image.
Claudio Giorgiutti’s staff – well known in the world of polo for its high level events – did not simply organize a week of exciting games, but also took thorough care of all the extra-sportive activities: the launch of the Rangers of the 4°Regiment Paratrooper Alpines, the Jack Russel coursing races, the Audi cars races on the iced lake, the demonstration of rescuing after avalanches by the dog-loving of the mountain rescue Guardia di Finanza, the wine tasting at the wine bar of Cortina, the fireworks at the closing dinner and, to add a bit of culture, the presentation of the last literary works by Lucilla Granata of Sky Sport and Fabiana Giacomotti, journalist of Il Foglio and Il Mondo.
Cortina Polo Gold Cup, well represents the world of polo and its exciting and unique life style. A life style that recounts the competitive intensity of men who, on the back of their horses, challenge each other for the victory and all the range of events that go with the competitions and that, during the polo week, take place in a unique location like Cortina which is already a bite of exclusivity.
