Fregate Island Private

An ecological haven

Located at a 20-minute flight from Mahé, main island of the Seychelles archipelagos, Fregate preserved its ancient beauty, thanks to a responsible management of tourism development: this is how luxury turned out to coincide with nature.

A piece of paradise. A land silhouetted between the sky and the sea, a natural reserve where the force of nature rules unchallenged. The island of Frégate, a 20 minute flight from Mahé, capital of the Seychelles, almost seems unreal with her uncontaminated beauty: Daniel Defoe, referred to these enchanting places to describe the inhabited island where Robinson Crusoe had wrecked.

Named Frègate by the explorer Lazere Picault, the Island owes its name to the “fregate” bird that over the years has become her symbol. The Frégate bird, one of the fastest and most agile birds in the world, with dark green feathers and a forked beak, is characterized by very thin legs and a wide wingspan; the male performs an elaborate and spectacular courting ritual.

Pirates were the first to set foot on the Seychelles, looking for a temporary haven in between raids in the Indian Ocean. The island of Frégate, in particular, provided them with everything they were looking for: secret caves, freshwater and plenty of food. Fleming, the author of the famous James Bond series, hypothesised several times that enormous treasures were hidden on the island. In support of his hypotheses, ancient graves and constructions, coins and weapons dating back to the pirates’ age were later discovered. Subjected by the French, who were the first to land in Mahé, the island provided so much food, so that the new inhabitants preferred to live off natural produce.

The Seychelles archipelagos became a British colony in 1812. The first act of the British governor, Bartolomeo Sullivan, was the abolition of slavery. This had an immediate impact: plantations were abandoned or partitioned into small plots of land. Since then the main product, still holding a significant position in the export business, is the coconut.

Today the Seychelles are governed by a peaceful and stable democracy and obviously 70% of the revenue comes from the tourism industry. In this wonderful archipelago, nature is the real host, thanks also to the numerous preservation initiatives to safeguard local flora and fauna.

On Frégate Island, the initiative spirit and the far-sightedness of the owner of this enchanted place, made it possible for time, on the island, to stop running 10 years ago, time since which the pendulum continued swaying towards the past. Low environmental impact and territory preservation are the main objectives on which the island tourist development plan focused.

A great number of ornithologists were mobilized to cooperate toward the safeguard and protection of the precious Frégate ecosystem.

Only 16 villas have been built on the island, for a total number of 40 guests. The small number of visitors allowed makes a stay on the island a luxurious experience set within a wonderful landscape. The recently refurbished villas, all with private pool and sea view, are immersed in nature. A few extras contribute to making the stay an unforgettable and fantastic experience. In the morning you can be “woken up by the smell of warm muffins for breakfast in the villa, you can use the private butler service 24 hours a day and plan a romantic dinner up in the tree house: these are only some of the services provided for guests. No desire remains unsatisfied. In the resort Frégate Island Private luxury coincides with the beauty of nature; in fact the owners, with the assistance of ecological and botanical experts, were able to create a real Noah’s ark. The President Marc Aerberhard stated: “Our objective is to create, in Frégate Island Private, a super luxurious structure in the utmost respect of nature; a structure in time-pertinent Creole style that perfectly adapts to an exclusive natural biosphere as indigenous as possible”.

Despite the presence of the hotel, animals and plants have adapted to create a balanced co-existence between man and nature.

The ylang ylang straw roofs are a material much coveted by birds to build their nests, the paved paths are a privileged area for a final warm up, the rubber walls of buildings offer a great shelter against sun and rain.

One of the most interesting developments is the active and enthusiastic participation of tourists in the various programs of environmental preservation: the tourist can for example decide to become the “godfather” of a baby turtle, directly financing its growth on the island. Presently in the tropical jungle there are approximately 400 giant turtles, in the bays and creeks of Frégate, sea turtles lay undisturbed their eggs. Unique birds species capture the tourists’ eyes from the sky, while the gigantic Seychelles millipede, a prehistoric animal that has remained unchanged for over 60 million years, can be seen wandering here and there on its countless legs.

The winning formula has been imitated by the whole archipelago, which to this date remains an exclusive destination, thanks to its uncontaminated places, the crystal clear water, the hospitality of its inhabitants and the correct management of environment: a dazzling example of beauty and health on our planet.
