Italy’s most beautiful Garden
Villa Nazionale Pisani, not far from Venice
Villa Nazionale Pisani, in Strà, close to Venice, hosts Italy’s most beautiful garden. The distinction was awarded for the worldwide competition “The most Beautiful Garden” by a jury composed by botanists, landscape architects, journalists and historians.
The award originated in the United States during the ‘90s with the aim of promoting green areas, and since then, it is sponsored by the Briggs & Stratton, a US company that produces garden machineries.
This year, in Italy, the competition reached its sixth edition. Its aim is to increase the value of the priceless landscape heritage of our Country.
The Villa Pisani garden is a spectacular example of landscape perfectly set within its original territory. It covers an entire bend of the Brenta river, elegantly matching with the baroque building that overlooks it. This is an extraordinary residence, built in the first half of the eighteenth century to celebrate the noble venetian Pisani di S. Stefano family and the recent election to Doge of one of its members, Alvise. The sumptuous internal decorations, from the opulent ballroom whose ceiling was painted a fresco by Tiepolo, to the halls in Empire Style realized around 1807 for want of Napoleon, who offered the villa to Italy’s vice-king Eugenio de Beauharnais, perfectly complete the wonderful sight of the garden.
Eleven hectares embellished by broderies and colossal statues, displayed on long perspective lines, according to the Versailles model, and venetian style fenced gardens.
The garden was realized before the construction of the villa, planned by the Paduan architect Girolamo Frigimelica de’ Roberti. The architect is the author of the famous maze, already known, back then, as one of the most beautiful in Europe, and of some original lodges as the exedra, with two wisteria-covered passageways at the sides, the turret at the centre of the maze and the stables in the background of the large inner parterre. On the top of a small hill, it is possible to enjoy the belvedere from the elegant eighteenth century Coffee House that was originally built to store ice. In the nineteenth century potted and outdoor plants using greenhouses and big trees were introduced.
Today the villa hosts temporary exhibitions – a personal of Mimmo Paladino is currently mounted – and presents throughout the year a rich botanic collection.
Following this distinction, Villa Pisani will compete for the title of “The Most Beautiful Garden of Europe”, together with the winners of other national editions.
