Art suggestions for the spring

It has now come the time for leisure trips or cultural excursions. For those deciding to stay in Italy, here we provide a map of some of the most interesting exhibitions that were recently inaugurated.

Lombardy
Milan gets ready for the week dedicated to “the contemporary” (MiArt – from April 17 to 20) starting with the numerous private galleries that populate the city. Rubin Gallery dedicates a solo-exhibition to the young artist Gabriele Memola, and the gallery will stay open till 10 p.m. on occasion of the white night of the Contemporary Exhibition (on April 18). At the Galleria Il Borgo on Corso San Gottardo, until April 15 there will be on display Sinfonie d’Acqua, an international exhibition dedicated to this precious element, to its visual and audio qualities. At the prestigious studio of Claudia Gian Ferrari is located the retrieved canvas by Cagnaccio di San Pietro, “Primo denaro”, 1928. Milanese celebrations continue also for the centenary of Futurism. Until May 5 it’ll be possible to enjoy the sight of “Peppereppepperodepero”, at the Auditorium of CAM, the mechanical little theatre inspired by “I Balli plastici” by Fortunato Depero, while the Scuola d’Arte Drammatica Paolo Grassi stages the opera-show “Revolverate” by Gian Pietro Lucuni.
Finally, the Museo d’Arte Antica del Castello Sforzesco will host, until May 31, the first big anthology-exhibition of the artist Cordelia von den Steinen. In Cremona, the Museo Civico Ala Ponzone, displays, for the first time in Italy, Suite 347, corpus made of 347 engravings that represent one of the greatest efforts of old Picasso; while in Bergamo contemporary art revives parallel to the antique one thanks to 8 exhibitions opened on the occasion of a quadruple Opening at the GAMeC. The curator Giacinto Di Pietrantonio created “Universal Exposition – art at the test of time”, in which the masterpieces of Art masters, artistic expressions far in time and in poetics, are compared through eight major themes: Universal Exposition of Power, of Daily life, of Life, of Death, of Mind, of Body, of Hatred and of Love.

Veneto
For lovers of engraving techniques, at the Museo Remondini di Bassano del Grappa, is currently on show an exceptional exhibition in which it’ll be possible to observe all together the masterpieces of  Dürer, Schongauer, Rembrandt, Tiepolo, Ricci, Canaletto and some rarities that are part of the family collection of the well-known Bassano printers.
On the other side, for those wanting to dive right into history, the roman section of the Museo Archeologico di Adria, on the Po river delta, reopened its doors, with it rich heritage of daily-use handiworks and the ruins of villas and residences of the civilization after which the homonym sea was later named.

Emilia-Romagna
At the very heart of the “Bassa” revive the Correggio and the time of dames and cavaliers. From San Secondo Parmense to Fontanellato, the Province of Parma organized a seven-stop trip through the most beautiful castles of the territory according to the project “Art at the times of Correggio”. The city of the Torre degli Asinelli, where the Book Fair for Young Readers just ended, offers an extraordinary showcase to Korea. On Easter Monday, in Bologna, it’ll be possible to visit the exhibition “Treasures from Korea – Portraits, Ceramics and Antique Documents” (Museo Civico Medioevale, from March 22 to May 24), a comprehensive flashback to deepen a slice of the culture of this country.
One of the destinations that throughout the latest years was rediscovered by cultural tourism is Ferrara. Here, at the wonderful Palazzo dei Diamanti, the Gonzaga’s history resurges next to that of one of its most famous citizens, Giorgio Morandi. Until June 2 it is on show the exhibition “Morandi. The art of engraving”, in which over a hundred and thirty works are displayed, all realized by the artist throughout his entire production.

Marche
Urbino too paid tribute to its most famous citizen, Raffaello Sanzio, with a grand exhibition at the Galleria Nazionale di Urbino. Until July 12, it’ll be possible to understand the close link between his paintings and the boosts offered by the birth city since the end of the seventies of the fifteenth century.

Tuscany
One of the most traditional destinations for holidays in the pursuit of culture is definitely Florence. Besides the celebrations dedicated to Galileo, there are other events that pay tribute to famous protagonists of Italian history and culture. Those that will manage to visit the Galleria degli Uffizi, will have the privilege to be among the first to closely look at the pala della Madonna del Cardellino di Raffaello, back to its splendour after a 9-year long restoration. Not to be missed is the exhibition on the 700th year of the Cotto di Impruneta that is enriched by the recently discovered bust realized with the same material and that, from an iconographic and stylistic confrontation, seems to be likely to be attributed to Leonardo da Vinci. On this matter of discoveries and long restorations, you can’t miss a stop at the Museo Bardini that reopens its doors after a decade-long restoration. Inside this palace in Oltrarno, you can find sculptures, paintings, objects and weapons, ranging from antique art to the XVIII century, gathered by Stefano Bardini, art merchant among the most pre-eminent Italian antique dealers. A curiosity: among the precious items preserved here, you can also find the originals of two city symbols: the Wild Boar of Pietro Tacca, the “Little Pig” of the Florentines, and the first Marzocco, already situated on the pediment of the Old Palace.

Lazio
Those wishing to visit Rome, will have the chance to choose among numerous exhibitions. Adding up to what we have already highlighted, there are two major events dedicated to the threshold of the Renaissance. At the Complesso del Vittoriano, until June 29, 2009, you can go back over the entire history of Giotto, whose roman season is, for some, the fundamental education thanks to which he could later reach the top of his maturity in the frescos of Assisi and in the altar pieces at the beginning of the fourteenth century. Moreover, at the end of the 550th anniversary from his death, Palazzo dei Caffarelli will display the greatest anthology of the Beato Angelico ever hosted in Italy since 1955, with a comprehensive selection of works from the most important Italian and foreign museums, some of which were never displayed before: “Beato Angelico. Campania
Naples opens its doors to the most original results of contemporary art, starting from one of its very first authors, Vincenzo Gemito. At the Museo Pignatelli is currently mounted one of the most complete retrospective dedicated to this talented sculptor, artist and jeweller, of Neapolitan origins, still mostly unknown but great model for the so called Arte Scapigliata, right in between nineteenth and twentieth century. Moving forward to our days, Museo MADRE continue the rich solo exhibition of Alighiero Boetti that with his shamanic art made out of the movement called “Povero” a great one. Until May 11, a special event curated by Achille Bonito Oliva that was meaningfully called “Alighiero & Boetti. Give birth to art”. Finally, at 4 Via Ferrara, the Gallery “AREA24” offers “Reflection of Identity”, a coral event in which it’s also possible to find a display of the original sculptures by Gianni Dessì.
