MiArt-Art Now in 2009

From 17th to 20th April, contemporary art in Milan

Less than two months away from the launch, yesterday has been presented the 14th MiArt, the International Fair of Modern and Contemporary Art of Milan which will take place from 17th to 20th April 2009 and through which the city intends to re-launch its image of capital of the Beauty, of arts and culture.

Fan, visitors and whoever is curious will be able to appreciate the proposals of the most prestigious Italian and foreign galleries, such as the Galleria Massimo De Carlo di Milano, the Farsetti of Cortina d’Ampezzo; the Imago Art Gallery London.
Fontana, Burri, Christo, Campigli, Rotella, De Chirico, Mirò, Pomodoro, Boetti, Botero, Salvo represent some of the names that from Futurism to Metaphysics, from Cubism to the Informal, from the Vanguards to the Poor Art, will constitute the heart of the exhibition. To become even more competitive, as Bologna and Basel, this year MiArt avails itself of new curators, a new advisory committee, a new organizational staff and a renewed Committee of Honor.

Giacinto Di Pietrantonio is the curator of the contemporary section, while the modern section has been assigned to Donatella Volontè. They share a common willingness to consolidate the cooperation between Fieramilanocity with the City and all those who promote contemporary arts in Milan, as highlighted Alessandro Cappello, Project manager of the events.

Given the requirement to create a well-structured and widespread Art system, involving not only art galleries, art collectors and artists, but the City in its whole, Milan itself will take part in it as the purchaser.

In fact, together with the governmental authorities, this year the IULM University will also be involved , official partner of the 2009 edition, whose collaboration develops in three ways: a congress, a meeting for secondary schools, and an art installation in the square in front of the campus; NABA, the art collectors associations ACACIA, Artegiovane Milano and Contemporary; and a range of exhibition “out of Fair” which will broaden the boundaries of the event to the reality of the city.

With this objective, the category Previews disappears and the young galleries become tout court part of the Contemporary sector, while a wide range of offers and proposals was consecrated by Laura Garbarino, Vip Relations, to private and international art collectors.

Within the cultural schedule, congresses and conferences pertaining to the issue of collecting and beauty are expected to be held; a tribute to Gabriele Basilico, author of the advertising campaign of the exhibition and of many of the pictures included in the catalog, as well as first of a range of annual collaborations between Milan and the artists, intended to the visual representation of the city.

Waiting for Milan to become again the Italian leader in terms of arts market as well as for the realization of the Museum of Contemporary Art, the Councillor for Culture of Milan, Massimiliano Finazzer Flory appointed as crucial the role of Milan as the purchaser of Italian artists.
For this reason, Vanessa Beecroft, Genoese by birth but formed in Milan, has been involved and on the inauguration day, Monday 16th March, at the Padiglione of Contemporary Art (PAC) will put on a performance on the theme of homologation and integration. The VB65 performance will be followed, in the next days, by some video exhibitions which represent one of the “meetings in the city”.

As for the events of Milano Moda and of the Design Week, the city furnishings become Art and the city turns into an open air museum. Besides the installations in squares and churches, the Councillor for Furnishings, Urban Decorum and Green areas, Maurizio Cadeo, has announced “Miraggi” a contemporary art trail (from 21th March to 20th April) thanks to which citizens and tourists as well while walking around the city will be surprised by real “apparitions”, that is, monumental sculptures, further links to the art-city system.

And there will also be Enjoy MiArt, the great public happening beginning on Friday 17th April with its peak on Saturday 18th with a white night of art; and Free Press MiArt Magazine, the first art and culture magazine which will be distributed in all the art galleries and institutions in Italy and abroad.

The 14th edition of MiArt will arrange a Purchase Fund thanks to the association Amici di MiArt, which counts on the purchase of the artworks on display in order to expose them to public fruition; and a special collaboration with Diners Club Italia, that, for the occasion, will realize an Original Credit Card in limited edition.
