Sun City Resort, South Africa
Luxury and hospitality
Sun City Resort is one of the most beautiful and attractive hotel facilities in the world, both in terms of privileged location (malaria-free), and in terms of history. Recently, Sun City Resort and Sun International, major group in the austral hospitality field, were awarded the title of “Best African Hotel Group” during the ceremony of the World Travel Awards, surpassing 200 societies of the touristy industry. But this is not all, Sun City Resort was awarded, during these “Tourism Oscar Awards” as defined by the Wall Street Journal, the title of Best African Family Resort, Best African Resort and Best South African Resort.
Sun City Resort‘s excellence was confirmed also by the recently won prize: Generation Next Award by the Sunday Times regarding those brands that are the favourites of children from 8 to 22. The Sun City Resort turned out to be the coolest local destination. This means not only hospitality for families, but also great offers for children and teenagers that want to really experience “the legend”, some thirty years after its realization.
To better explain.
The Sun City Resort was inaugurated on 7th December 1979 as the concrete realization of a visionary idea by tycoon Sol Kerzner. A sumptuous temple, perfectly proportioned and inspired by African fantasy, extremely successful since the very beginning thanks to its mixture of glamour, style and elegance that made out of it a key venue for luxury afro-chic holidays throughout the last thirty years.
Since the very opening, the resort stands out for its 18-holed golf course, the Gary Player Country Club, among the world’s most important and beautiful, but also for tennis fields, an enormous swimming pool, a luxury Casino and the Extravaganza theatre where performers included Cliff Richard, Leo Sayer and Gloria Gaynor. Only during its first year, Sun City Resort registered over a million visitors. The following year new openings occurred: the Hotel Cabanas, the artificial lake Waterworld, the Entertainment Centre – whose opening was marked by the presence of Frank Sinatra – the Cascades Hotel, immersed into a 4-hectares luxurious park and set against a scenario made of waterfalls and tropical vegetation, and eventually in 1992 the Palace of the Lost City, a proper marvel of visionary architecture inspired by an i8maginary African kingdom, today belonging to the Leading Hotels of the World Group.
After numerous successes and changes, today Sun City Resort is one of the icons holidays in the sign of luxury, adventure and nature in South Africa.
Diamond tip of this huge estate is The Palace of the Lost City. It’s a sumptuous building, with 10 towers decorated with African patters of which one is 70 metres high, 15000 decorative elements tailor made and a flourishing vegetation aimed at protecting the surroundings.
The Palace of the Lost City is a fantastic structure, which draws upon a North African legend. It is told that a tribe of very ancient African origins realized its own culture through the building of beautiful architecture and luxurious hospitality, marked by love for nature and in particular for an old volcanic crater called “The Valley of the Sun” in South Africa. Here they built a palace that was later destroyed by a earthquake, event that gave the name of “Palace of the Lost City”, that revives today in this magnificent hotel.
Guests are welcomed in an exceptional hall with an astonishing cupola (25 metres tall, with a 16 metres diameter) painted a fresco by Italian artisans with an all African iconography.
Located within water courses, patios, gardens and decorative elements of elephants, antelopes, zebras, and lions recalling the life of an imaginary African kingdom – 85% of the structure is realized by south african local materials – the 338 rooms, suites, three restaurants, a big swimming pool and various bars. All decorations are entirely hand made, both in common and private areas.
For example. Each of the 338 room doors is decorated with craftsmanship and opens up on spacious environments characterized by afro-chic style, with carpets and clothes especially tailor made for The Palace.
All around, an immense exotic park, spreading over 25 hectares where are gathered 1.600.000 plants belonging to 3.200 different species, among which a baobab forest and, getting out of the Resort, a park especially realized for the Sun City Resort, hosting magnificent elephants.
