Turin Book Fair 2009
At the Lingotto, from 14th until 18th May
Books, characters and events: the 22nd edition of the Turin International Book Fair, of course in the historic venue of Lingotto Fiere.
The event, longed for by writers, journalists and fonds of reading, reopens in the pursuit of the authentic search for the “IO, gli altri. Occasioni per uscire dal guscio (Me, the others. Occasions to get out of the shell)” as quoted in a famous aphorism by Italo Calvino: «Getting to know others has something special: it goes through getting to know oneself». In fact, immediately after the very inauguration – Thursday 14th May, 10am, at the Sala Gialla, in the presence of the President of the Chamber Gianfranco Fini and of the Minister of Culture of the Arab Republic of Egypt Farouq Hosni – Umberto Eco will hold a lecture. The popular intellectual will face the French scriptwriter Jean Claude Carrière and the journalist and writer Marco Belpoliti (the Minister for Cultural Heritage Sandro Bondi and the Spanish Minister for Culture César Antonio Molina will also attend) in the first of a series of interesting meetings on the topic of the SELF, between neurosciences and psycho-analysis.
Lighter, but equally stimulating, topics will be tackled as well, such as that of Ancient Egypt, Country hosting the event and since February on exhibition at the Venaria with “Egypt. Hidden treasures”.
An exhibition-event of an ever greater appeal, as demonstrated by the figures of the last editions: about 1.400 exhibitors, 300 thousands visitors, a large media coverage and the entire range of Italian editors, including inedited editors – 53 this year, among which Purple Press, :duepunti edizioni, Angelo Colla Editore ReNoir Comics -, Italian Regions and professionists of the world of books.
Numerous famous names of the International literature also this year present at the Lingotto, as the Turkish Nobel Orhan Pamuk, the well-beloved by Italians David Grossman, the great Chinese narrator Yu Hua, Palestinian authors and an international parterre full of musicians, cinema and theatre actors that will talk about themselves right in front of the audience.
But, as all the big events of big cities, also the Turin Book Fair becomes a celebration for the entire city network with which it interacts through many parallel events.
Among these, we point out the return of Lingua Madre, format dedicated to the experiment of different languages and cultures with a background of music happenings of different geographic origin, that make the hybridizing of experiences and languages their main concept. Also the space of Caffè Letterario is back, set up at Pavillion 3 thanks to the contribution of the Turin City Hall, of the Province of Turin and of the Region of Piemonte with a calendar full of events. Among the innovative projects, Pavillion 5 of the International Book Fair hosts the Bookstock Village that, with the theme of “La Strada”, presents 153 events, 169 hours of workshops, shows, concerts, award distribution and, for the first time, the great book shop Fiaccadori di Parma with a wide selection of children books in the original languages of all the countries of the world.
Eventually, among the big initiatives for the promotion of reading launched by the Fair and carried on throughout the year in collaboration with the schools of Piemonte and of Italy, we point out the conclusion of the project Adopt a writer, the tournaments of online reading Libri in Gioco, PlayBoo and the Incubatore – the area of the Fair dedicated to the 36 new-born publishing houses of Italy, that have been on the publishing market for less than twenty-four months.
A Book Fair not to be missed, also online, on fieralibro.it together with all the other events among which Eataly, the high quality food and wines market.
May the reading of a good book become a great luxury to spread in a interactive and constant way.
